Metadata Remover
Strip EXIF, GPS, and hidden privacy data from your photos instantly. Your files stay on your device.
Local-first privacy
Protect your privacy before sharing.
Most photos contain hidden details like your GPS location, camera settings, and date taken. This tool strips that data by re-encoding the image entirely in your browser.
Files are processed in your browser and never uploaded.
What is Image Metadata?
Image metadata is hidden information embedded within a photo file. This data is created by digital cameras and smartphones to provide technical context about the image. While useful for professional photographers, it often contains sensitive personal information that you may not want to share publicly on social media or websites.
EXIF Data
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is the most common form of metadata. It includes details such as:
- Camera model and manufacturer
- Lens settings (aperture, focal length, ISO)
- Date and exact time the photo was taken
- Software used for editing
GPS & Location Metadata
Most modern smartphones embed precise GPS coordinates into the metadata of every photo you take. When you upload these photos to the internet, anyone who downloads the file can potentially see exactly where you were—whether it's your home, your child's school, or your workplace.
Why Remove Metadata Before Sharing?
Removing metadata is a key step in protecting your digital privacy. By stripping this information, you ensure that:
- Identity Protection: Your device's unique serial numbers and camera details are removed.
- Physical Safety: Your location history is not leaked through embedded GPS tags.
- Smaller Files: While metadata is small, stripping it can slightly reduce the overall file size of the image.
How Local Browser Metadata Removal Works
ConvertUnlimited uses a "destructive re-encoding" method to ensure all metadata is gone. When you add an image, our tool draws it onto an HTML5 Canvas. This process only captures the raw pixel data. When we export the image back into a file, the browser creates a fresh file containing only the pixels and basic headers required for the format. All EXIF, GPS, and XMP data is naturally discarded during this transformation.
Note: Because we re-encode the pixels, the file size may change slightly even if the dimensions remain the same. This is a side effect of the browser's native image encoder.
Batch Metadata Removal
You can drag and drop dozens of photos at once to clean your entire gallery in seconds. Everything happens in your device's RAM, ensuring that your private photos never touch our disks or traverse the internet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this tool safe for sensitive photos?
Yes. Because the tool runs entirely in your local browser environment, no image data is ever uploaded to a server. You can even use the tool while offline once the page is loaded.
Does it support PNG and WebP?
Yes. While metadata is most common in JPEGs, PNG and WebP files can also contain metadata (like XMP). Our re-encoding method strips data from all supported formats.
Will my images lose quality?
We use high-quality re-encoding (90%+ quality by default) to ensure that the visual clarity of your photo remains identical to the original while the hidden data is removed.
